Resumen
AI Overviews is the AI-powered response that Google displays above search results. It appears in 21% of searches, and in over 57% when the query is a question. To be cited, the number one requirement is to rank in the top 10: 76% of the cited URLs are already there. Then, mentions of your brand on other sites, covering the entire topic (not just a single keyword), and answering directly without fluff matter. In this guide, we show you the 7 steps, with the data that supports each one.

✓Content reviewed on 10 October 2026Published on 25 July 2026 · Updated on 26 September 2026 · On 10 October 2026 we checked the prices, figures and claims of every post on this blog against their original sources.

More and more searches on Google do not end in a click. They end in a response that Google’s own AI writes at the top: the AI Overview.

What’s the impact? When one appears, the results below lose 34.5% of clicks according to Ahrefs. Other studies measure drops of up to 61%. In the face of this, there are two options: watch the clicks disappear, or be included in the response.

In this article, we explain what AI Overviews are, what searches trigger them, and the 7 steps with data for Google to cite your content.

What is AI Overviews?

AI Overviews is the Google feature that generates an AI response at the top of search results. Instead of just showing you the classic ten links, Google writes a summary and cites the sources it used, with links to those pages. It works with the same models as Gemini.

Therefore, optimizing for AI Overviews and optimizing for Gemini is largely the same work. And an important fact for the Spanish-speaking world: AI Overviews is already deployed in Spanish, in Spain and almost all of LATAM.

When does Google show an AI Overview?

Not in every search. Google reserves it for queries where a written response adds more than a list of links. Ahrefs analyzed 146 million SERPs and found a clear pattern:

  • Questions with «why»: 59.8% of the time show AI Overview.
  • General questions: 57.9%.
  • Yes or no questions: 57.4%.
  • Definitions («what is…»): 47.3%.
  • Long searches, 7 or more words: 46.4%.
  • All searches on average: 21%.

Practical reading: if your content answers specific questions in your industry, you are already competing in the space where AI Overviews appears twice or three times more than average.

The number 1 requirement: being in the top 10 of Google

Here is the data that organizes the entire strategy. Ahrefs analyzed 1.9 million citations in AI Overviews. The 76% of the cited URLs were already ranking in the top 10 of Google for that search. Even more: the median position of the most cited URL is #2. El 76% de las URLs citadas en AI Overviews ya rankea en el top 10 de Google y la posición mediana de la más citada es la 2 Why does this happen? Because AI Overviews does not invent its sources: it searches for them in the Google index, just like a traditional search engine. If your page is not indexed and well positioned, the AI will not find it.

Traducción: el SEO tradicional no murió con la IA. Es el pasaje de entrada. Sin top 10 no hay cita, y sin GEO encima del SEO, no hay visibilidad en las respuestas.

Query fan-out: the key that almost no one explains

When someone searches for something, Google does not process a single query. It breaks it into several related sub-queries. This is called query fan-out.

Example: someone searches for «best CRM for SMEs». Behind the scenes, Google also queries «CRM prices», «easy-to-use CRM», «CRM with support in LATAM». Diagrama del query fan-out: Google parte una búsqueda en sub-consultas y cita a las páginas que responden varias a la vez And who does the AI Overview cite? The pages that answer several of those sub-queries at once. The fact: pages that rank for multiple sub-queries of the fan-out have 161% more likelihood of being cited.

The consequence for your content: stop thinking in isolated keywords and start thinking in complete topics. A guide that covers the entire topic beats five articles that tackle one keyword each.

How to appear in AI Overviews: the 7 steps

Los 7 pasos para aparecer en AI Overviews de Google, cada uno respaldado con datos

StepWhat to doThe data that supports it
1Aim for informational questionsQuestions trigger AI Overviews 57.9% of the time
2First rank in the top 1076% of citations come from the top 10
3Respond directly, without fillerLength hardly correlates with citations (0.04)
4Cover the entire topic, not just a keywordFan-out: 161% more likelihood of citation
5Get brand mentionsThe factor that correlates the most; YouTube reaches 0.74
6Appear in authoritative listingsAlmost 50% of the citations are lists of «best»
7Add structured dataGoogle considers them key for AI search

Let’s go step by step.

1. Aim for informational questions

Look for the real questions in your industry: the «how», «why», «what is», and «which one is better». These are the searches that trigger AI Overviews twice as much as average. And they are the ones your audience is already asking.

2. First rank in the top 10

Without traditional positioning, there is no citation. If your page is in position 30, your priority is not to «optimize for AI»: it is to improve the usual SEO. Content better than what ranks, links, and clear structure.

3. Respond directly, without fluff

The surprising fact: the correlation between content length and citations in AI Overviews is almost zero. Moreover, research on Google’s «grounding» shows that content utilization stagnates around 540 words per topic, and pages over 2,000 words perform less and less.

The practical rule: answer the question in the first lines of each section. Then expand for those who want more. Never the other way around. It’s the same principle as our 7-step model for optimizing content for AI search engines.

4. I covered the entire topic, not just a keyword

For the fan-out query we saw above: Google rewards pages that answer multiple sub-queries together. Create content clusters: a central guide and linked satellite articles.

Internal links between content on the same topic confirm to Google that your site covers the entire topic.

5. Get brand mentions outside your site

This is the strongest finding of the study: brand mentions are the factor that correlates most with appearing in AI Overviews. Mentions on the web correlate 0.66. Those on YouTube, 0.74: it is the most cited domain in AI Overviews, with 22 million citations.

How do you achieve this? Authentic reviews, media appearances, collaborations with YouTube creators in your niche, presence in communities. It is E-E-A-T pure, and it follows the same logic that applies to appearing in ChatGPT.

6. Appear in authoritative listings

Almost 50% of the citations in AI Overviews come from «best X» type articles. Identify the listings in your category where your competitors appear and work to be there.

In Spanish, this point weighs even more: there are fewer quality listings, so each one counts double. In fact, we measured which sources AI uses for recommendations in Spanish in our Experiment 1, and listings dominate.

7. Add structured data

Google confirmed that structured data is important for AI search. The types that apply most: Article, HowTo and FAQPage.

A technical note: several AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript. If your schema is generated in the browser and not on the server, it does not exist for those bots.

And since you’re touching on the technical side: structured data does move the needle, unlike other trendy files like llms.txt, which today almost no bot reads.

What DOESN’T work (and can cost you dearly)

Two warnings that come from the same data: AI Overviews is not deterministic. The response and the cited sources can change with each search. Appearing today does not guarantee appearing tomorrow. That’s why it is monitored, not checked once. Adding filler content makes things worse.

The author of the Ahrefs study experienced it firsthand: she inflated an article with extra sections, lost visibility, and only regained it after deleting the added content.

More content does not mean more citations. More accurate content means more citations. If a section does not answer a real sub-query, it is diluting those that do.

How to know if you appear in AI Overviews

The part that almost everyone skips: measuring. You can check it manually by searching your key queries on Google, but there are two problems. The answers change between searches, and your history personalizes what you see.

To do it seriously, you need continuous monitoring: the same questions, every day, without history bias.

That’s what we do at CreceRank: you set up the prompts for your industry and the platform queries them every day on Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity. You see if your brand appears, in what position, and which competitors are winning the answer. → Start 14 days free, no credit card required

Conclusion

So, how to appear in AI Overviews? There is no secret trick. There is a sequence with data:

  • First, the top 10: 76% of citations come from there. Traditional SEO is the entry pass.
  • Then, the complete topic: answer the questions in your industry directly and covering the sub-queries of the fan-out.
  • In parallel, your brand outside your site: mentions, listings, and YouTube are the factors that correlate the most.

And all of that, measured. Because AI Overviews change with each search, and what you don’t measure you can’t improve. If you want to know today if Google already cites you in its AI responses, in CreceRank you can see it in minutes.

FAQs

It is the answer generated with artificial intelligence that Google shows above the search results, with citations to the sources it used. It works with the Gemini models and is already available in Spanish in Spain and LATAM.
The main requirement is to rank in the top 10 of Google for that search: 76% of the cited URLs are already there. Then they add answering questions directly, covering the complete topic, getting brand mentions on other sites, and using structured data.
It is possible but unlikely: only 24% of the citations come from outside the top 10. If your page does not rank, your best investment is to improve the traditional SEO of that page before any optimization for AI.
Yes, when an AI Overview appears, the results below lose on average 34.5% of clicks according to Ahrefs, and other studies measure drops of up to 61%. The way to compensate for it is to be one of the cited sources within the answer.
Yes, indirectly. Google confirmed that structured data is important for AI search. The most useful are Article, HowTo, and FAQPage, always generated on the server: several AI crawlers do not execute JavaScript.
Searching manually is unreliable: answers change between searches and your history personalizes them. The correct approach is to monitor the same queries every day. With CreceRank you can see if you appear in AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, and against which competitors.
Yes. It is deployed in Spain and in almost all LATAM countries. The principles for appearing are the same as in English, with one advantage: in Spanish, there is less quality content competing, so the opportunities to be cited are greater.
